Making a Joke Out of Spite (and Accidentally Crushing It)

Hey friends. I’m J.R. Bjornson, also known as Blind Guy Comedy. I’ve been doing stand-up for about eight years now, and almost everything I put on stage comes from my own life. I’m not much for making up wild stories I just tell the truth and hope it’s funny. Recently, I found myself in a conversation with someone who really doesn’t understand addiction or homelessness. Instead of arguing, I did what comics do best I turned my frustration into a joke.
The joke? I basically said, “If you think you’re better than addicts, go ahead and try crystal meth twice and then quit. If you can walk away that easy, maybe you’re better. Until then, maybe don’t judge.” When I told it on stage, I thought it would just be “haha funny,” but to my surprise the audience went full “HAHAHA funny.” The laughs came hard and fast, and I realized that sometimes jokes born out of spite can really hit home especially when they carry a little uncomfortable truth.

That’s the thing about comedy: it’s not just about the punchline, it’s about taking real life, even the rough parts, and finding the humour tucked inside. For me, being blind, being a dad of five, and just trying to figure out life in Alberta means I’ve always got material. Thanks for reading, thanks for laughing, and if you enjoy this ride, stick around there’s always another story (and hopefully another big laugh) right around the corner.
